Why do you want to adopt a retired racing greyhound?
Mid South Greyhound Adoption Option encourages all applicants to do as much research as possible to prepare you and your family for life with a greyhound. There are many books out there for information on adopting. Our favorite books are: Retired Racing Greyhounds for Dummies by Lee Livingood, Adopting the Retired Racing Greyhound by Cynthia Brannigan, and Childproofing your Dog by Brian Kilcommons. The internet has a lot of information on greyhound adoption. The Greyhound Project, inc. and the American Greyhound Council are two wonderful sites. Also be sure to check out Race for Adoption and Born to Run.

Is your yard fenced? If so, please give the height and material it is made out of.

What are your intentions as to the greyhound's daily exercise?
Do you have stairs inside and/or outside your home? Yes      No
If you do have stairs in your home, will you be patient with the dog as he or she learns how to go up and down them? Yes      No
In most cases, greyhounds have never had to attempt stairs and this can be difficult for them to do initially. Please be aware that there are some dogs who never become comfortable with the stairs, especially long flights.
Do you currently have a veterinarian? Yes      No
Have you discussed your desire to adopt a greyhound and asked about his or her experience and understanding of greyhound's special veterinary needs?
Yes      No
Please list a few special veterinary needs that you have read about.
Please list any current pets and pets you have had in the past.
If the pet is no longer living, please give the reason.
Have you ever turned a pet over to a humane society, rescue group, shelter, or breeder? If so, please explain.
On a scale of 1-10 (1 being none and 10 being very experienced), how would you rate your knowledge of dog behavior?
What would you do if your greyhound exhibited behavioral issues?
Please explain the importance of keeping a greyhound on a leash at all times in unfenced areas.

Retractable leashes are not recommended by MSGAO because if a greyhound sprints after something, the mechanism within the leash will snap and the dog will become loose and in potential danger.
Where will the greyhound stay during the day and at night?

Greyhounds have very thin skin and little body fat and are very susceptable to extreme weather conditions, both heat and cold. It is imperative to your greyhound's health and well being that he or she remain an inside dog. Extreme weather conditions can be deadly to a greyhound in only a matter of hours.

Additional Comments:

Applications can take up to two weeks to be processed. Applicants will be notified via telephone that the application was approved. Once you are approved, you may contact the kennel to set up an appointment to view the available hounds. Once you have selected your new family member, he or she will go in for surgery and will be ready to go home in about 10-15 days if there are no complications. MSGAO reserves the right to deny any application for any reason. All applicants are subject to a home inspection and family interview with a representative from MSGAO. Applications are valid for six months.

I UNDERSTAND AND AGREE TO THE FOLLOWING:

Greyhounds can live 12 or more years and that this is a lifetime commitment.

The greyhound must have proper identification on him or her at all times.

A greyhound is an indoor pet and must not be kept outside without human supervision for any reason.

A dog is a lifetime commitment financially. I agree that I am personally and financially prepared to take care of this greyhound including giving heartworm preventative, flea and tick preventative, regular vet visits, emergency vet visits, feeding, grooming, and boarding.

If for any reason the greyhound(s) adopted through MSGAO must be returned, they must be returned to MSGAO or a group or individual approved by MSGAO.

I agree not to sell the greyhound(s).

Adoption fees are non-refundable.
